Specifically, de Barra indicates that he pitched a scene for The Witcher Episode 4 wherein Geralt would have been swallowed by a monster known as a Selkie Maw. The White Wolf was then to cut himself free from the inside of the beast, only to be chased by “squirming baby Selkie Maws,” and while fans get a glimpse of the fallout of this confrontation in the episode, the battle itself is totally absent.

Additionally, de Barra shared a sketch he made of the Selkie Maw, which he suggests was presented alongside the original pitch. This sketch can be seen below, and it depicts the Selkie Maw as a massive beast with a myriad of legs, deadly-looking teeth, and two forked-tongues. While it is difficult to know exactly how this sketch would have been rendered for the show, some fans are sure to captivated by the drawing, and perhaps they will see it brought to life in The Witcher Season 2.
With respect to why the Selkie Maw did not make it into this season of The Witcher, that is not currently known. However, unlike de Barra’s creature, the monsters that do appear in the series are all featured in Andrzej Sapkowski’s novels, and perhaps The Witcher showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich ultimately felt it best for this aspect of the show to stick close to the source material.
Alternatively, it may have been that the battle with the Selkie Maw simply did not fit well within the context of The Witcher’s fourth episode. For better or worse, this episode is when the show’s complex timeline really begins to come into focus, and dedicating screen time to such a fight may not have served that goal well. That said, it is still fun to get a peek at more The Witcher content, even if it did not make it into the show, and seeing de Barra’s sketch is indeed a real treat.
The Witcher Season 1 is available now on Netflix.
